Tuck Sawgrass Nine Band Armadillo is the local building inspector. ‘Is’ is almost ‘was’ as he is but a few months shy of retirement. He loves his job, so he‘s in no rush to go but, at the same time, looks forward to spending the days with his beloved. He is just head over heels for her, though he is certain he doesn’t say it often enough. Just as his armour-like shell protects his soft little body, Tuck keeps his feelings equally protected and under wraps - for no reason except history and habit really. For her, he hung the stars; she’s chosen to find it endearing that he won’t say the L-word out loud (yes, that’d be l-o-v-e). He tells her that it’s in what he does not what he says.
Today, though, as he strolled along to work, he passed by Scruffles Wigglebottom Skunk tending the gardens at his winter house. Scruffs had found a few near-spent rogue dandelions smack in the middle of his caladiums and was very nearly spent, trying to extricate them. It must have been the beautiful pink-veined, heart-shaped leaves of the caladium that put Tuck in a romantic mindset: when he spotted the lowly dandelions, they appeared to him not as weeds but as wishes. If he picked up his pace from a stroll to a trot, he’d be able to return home and deliver a bouquet of them to his sweetheart before work. For everything she is and does and dreams for their today and every single tomorrow, he wants to make each and every one of those wishes come true.

We spent a long time on this. Every Central & Gus illustration is hand-drawn in pencil — and so we are eternally inspired by the classic #2, enrobed in that particular shade of yellow. For that, we call it Ticonderoga Harvest. Studies on colour and emotion find that people associate this shade with joy — which felt exactly right. It also nods, quietly, to our farm roots, everything that grows out of the land, and also to a less tangible but just as important creative harvest. The envelope is not an afterthought. It is part of the story.
