Every autumn just before the equinox, Thomasin Healing meets with Ford Buckminster Beaver to go through his kindling inventory. He makes a habit of leaving his premium stock aside for her, and rightfully so: this particular wood is to build a very particular fire. One that will withstand the wind and snow and cold of even the most severe winter. Using her little wings as bellows and adding kindling as necessary, she keeps the fire alight through the season, with everyone taking as they need to warm their home, heat their water, and roast their vegetables.As the winter turns to spring and with safety matches being a rare commodity in the community, the fire is extinguished save, for next year, one candle's worth that Thomasin keeps on her window sill. As she tends to it, she is ever reminded of the eternal nature of things and the power of something so subtle and elusory.

We spent a long time on this. Every Central & Gus illustration is hand-drawn in pencil — and so we are eternally inspired by the classic #2, enrobed in that particular shade of yellow. For that, we call it Ticonderoga Harvest. Studies on colour and emotion find that people associate this shade with joy — which felt exactly right. It also nods, quietly, to our farm roots, everything that grows out of the land, and also to a less tangible but just as important creative harvest. The envelope is not an afterthought. It is part of the story.
